First sign-in and the first environment
The server is running and nobody can sign in yet. This session creates the first administrator, signs in, and makes the first environment usable: the cluster is already connected, and the address your clients call is set here.
Before this session
- A running G8 server and the setup token from its log, from Install G8 itself.
- The address your clients call the gateway at, from Plan the installation.
In this session
- Open the console. It shows Create the first administrator and says: g8 has no users yet. Enter the setup token from the server log, then create the platform administrator account. Enter the token, choose the administrator's username and password, and create the account. This account holds the Platform administrator role, the one that may do everything. Sign in and first setup follows the form field by field, and Users, roles and access lists the roles.
- The console signs you in with that username and password as soon as the account exists and opens the overview. Every later sign-in, by anyone, is the form titled Welcome back; Users, roles and access says how long a session lasts.
- Open Environments under the administration part of the menu. The first environment is the one row, named after the slug the server was given; its row menu holds Edit. Environments says what an environment is and what stays separate between two of them.
- In that form, set the Gateway URL to the address your clients call, save, and run Test connection from the same row menu. The form is the one Add an environment explains field by field; the stores at the bottom of it wait until the API has traffic, under See what happens.
- Read what the environment's page shows once it is connected, on Environment settings.
What you should see
The console's menu shows the environment's name in the switcher at the top, and the environment's page shows the cluster as connected, with its gateway nodes. Routes, consumers and the other objects are empty lists; the first of them comes in Your first API.
Where this leads
The administrator is alone in the console. People and access adds the others: local users, people from Active Directory, and the roles they hold in this environment.
